Thank you for your feedback. @Stoo: if `rsync -vvv` is the culprit then [1] is the right upstream bug, however there are so many (mostly stale) "rsync hangs" upstream bugs [2] that I'm not sure which one is the correct one to follow-up to here. The command in the description of this report only has a single -v after all.
I think it won't be easy to make progress here without a reliable way to reproduce the issue and without the involvement of the upstream developers. What I suggest is to try to narrow the steps needed to reproduce the hang, check if it still affects the latest upstream release, and try to make the most appropriate bug move forward.
