It turns out that if you installed Ubuntu 18.04 LTS using the .iso images released in April 2018, you may kept back with Linux 4.18 and old Xorg display server. I updated kernel 5.0, Xorg, and graphics drivers by opting-in to “hardware enablement” (HWE).
