Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

This is a bug similar, but not identical to bug #80318.

When Compiz (3D Desktop / Visual Effects set in Appearance Preferences
to "Normal", "Extra" or "Custom") is used, following happens after the
laptop wakes up from sleep:

First, you see the message of the screenlock prompting for password. No
weirdness here. However, after you have typed the password, the screen
becomes garbage. You can see colorful traces of the windows, however,
and a perfect cursor. The interface seems to react, changing between
desktops apparently works, you can even launch programs, open menus etc.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace brings back the gdm without any problems.

If you have opened the appearance preferences dialog before "going to
sleep" and you blindly manage to revert to "no effect" by randomly
clicking on the "ghost" of the preferences window after the wake up, the
screen goes back to normal. HOWEVER, when you now get back to the compiz
(e.g. by clicking on the default "Normal" mode in "Appearance"), the
screen once again is gibberish.

Hope this helps.
