You make a fair point. I've just tried this myself and yes, the issue
definitely is present in Xenial (5.1.6.2). Looks like it was
subsequently fixed though, as I cannot reproduce from Bionic (6.0.7.3)
onwards.
It's unfortunate but at this point it's hard to justify backporting a
low impact fix like this to Xenial. I'm truly sorry that this was not
handled sooner.
