I think I figured it out. The find function was actually working all along. However, for some reason, the initial size of the window is such that the "Find" dialog at the bottom of the page is exactly off-screen (hidden below the toolbar). When I "maximize" the window, I then see the find dialog.
Why is the evince window opening with this initial size? Is it making some assumptions as to the initial size of the window? I have a Gnome panel across the top and across the bottom, 24 pixels high.
