The rather central functionality to add entries via DOI rather than copy&pasteing every singe field stopped working in versions 3.8.2 and below because doi.org and several publishers removed support for http in favor of https. See jabref bug report: https://github.com/JabRef/jabref/issues/2879 This issue has been resolved in version 4.0.0. and following. Please advance the ubuntu package do version 4.x (published Oct 4, 2017 !)
