I also have a lot of problems installing a 3com network card (Officeconnect 3CRWE154A72) and am getting asked if I want to "Restart Network to activate changes" every time I boot up the machine (That is before the Ubuntu logo comes up while booting). I suspect this error/conflict to maybe screw up my update log file but I am by no means an expert.
