I have an XPS-410. Gutsy sound works out of the box (without linux- backports-modules). Make sure your outputs are not muted. I use gnome- alsamixer since it clearly labels muted channels. Note that I only tested using the front microphone jack since the rear speaker jack is a real PITA for me to get to.
