Not currently using Ubuntu, but I can attest that this exact same issue
persists across all distro's that I have tried.

Currently on Arch with kernel 5.19 and it still happens (ASUS FX503VM).
If it helps anyone narrow down the problem (well above my skill level),
kernel version 5.0 seemed to have no problems. If I upgraded or
downgraded from that specific kernel, I would have the issue, but not
otherwise.

Would be great if someone could confirm/deny that they experienced same
thing with that kernel. Glancing through the changelogs from 4.19 -> 5.0
-> 5.1, I didn't see anything specific to touchpad, though I could have
easily missed it.
