Are you saying that you compiled kernel with gcc-8 or that you use gcc-8 in your day to day work? On my system I get a lockup if I do not use idle=nomwait. Like everyone else I too have tried verious combinations to be stable. (Ryzen 2500U Laptop) As far as I can tell this bug is not really fixed except on Microsoft Windows (and who knows what they are doing).
