it seems to advise as well to reinstall chardet which I just did runinng the command line you gave me. I am sorry I am not able to tell what lead to this particular situation: it is obviously my fault as I am the one and only user of this machine but I don't recall altering ubuntu libraries. I have only been using Ubuntu for a year and a half, I might have done this unknowingly. Anyway your support is much appreciated, if you want more outputs from my computer to understand the problem I will gladly give them to you.
