The kern log I posted from the failed boot, I blocked udev from starting and started it once the filesystem was fully loaded and all. At that point, it was able to write the log.
Out of curiosity I just noticed that the current kernel panic isn't the same. I notice a reference to reiserfs "search_for_position_by_key". I'll keep lookg and see what I found.
