A work around for the problem of the internal speakers not being muted when plugging in headphones: System: Dell Vostro 1500, Ubuntu Fiesty, kernel v. 2.6.22-12-386, `lspci -v |grep -i audio` ="00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)" 1. Plug your headphones into the *microphone* jack. 2. Open the gnome volume control panel (right-click on the sound icon by the clock, click 'Open Volume Control') 3. Click the 'Switches' tab, check the box 'Line In as Output'. 4. Click the 'Playback' tab, mute the 'Front' channel. Use the 'Surround' channel to change the volume for your headphones (or the volume control in the program you're using). 5. Optionally, you can right-click on the sound icon by the clock, click 'Preferences', and click 'Surround' to change which channel the sound icon is reporting. The only problem I have with my laptop (Dell Vostro 1500) is that the volume buttons on the front of it still are bound to the 'Front' channel. I'm sure it would take just a few key bindings to get those buttons working, but I use my speakers more often than headphones on my laptop so I haven't tried it yet.
