Peter, I do not know if NX client remotly changes anything, but under gnome in a local xsession ALT-F2 brings up the Run Application dialog, where you can type in xterm (assuming xterm is installed). Note be sure NOT to have the 'Run in terminal' checkbox selected, since gnome-terminal is broken it would not launch....You might also try to slogin from another machine to diagnose the gnome-terminal issue...You can also right click on the panel, select 'Add to Panel'. In the dialog choose 'Custom Application Launcher', Choose Type: 'Application', Name: xterm, Command: /usr/bin/xterm. .
