Robert, to have page numbers printed in a text document, you need to insert a "page number" field in the header/footer section of the page, this is not done automatically for new documents. Just tested (printed to PDF) and that works as expected.
The Format/Page dialog allows you to select the type of numbering you want, it doesn't mean that page numbers will be inserted by default. Regarding the second issue (duplex printing), you already mentioned it on https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60428 and it was suggested that you file a new bug upstream with details about your printer.
