Ok, bug #1737112 is related: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/saods9/+bug/1737112 I installed miniconda3 a few days ago. When I removed it from the path (commented export PATH="/usr/local/miniconda3/bin:$PATH" in my ~/.bashrc file), I could start ds9 normally (the reason it worked with sudo permissions is probably because it didn't have miniconda3 in the path).
