I know this is a very old thread, but I'm posting this here just because the last two had something in common with me.
I just randomly started getting this error too. I've got Ubuntu 7.10 on my Dell Inspiron E1505 (along with Vista) and just thought since I'm also at 1440x900 there could be some connection... or not.
