I executed:
 gconftool-2 --recursive-unset 
/system/storage/drives/_org_freedesktop_Hal_devices_storage_serial_ST332062_0A_0_0

Then plugged-in the USB harddrive.  Same error.  I executed:
gnome-mount -v -b -t -d /dev/disk/by-uuid/$(readlink 
/dev/disk/by-uuid/381C49871C4940DC)

I  got the same results as yesterday.  Sorry!
 gconftool-2 --ping returned nothing (certainly not a "2").

So, where is this database that I might remove the "rw" option?
