I have a Toshiba A105-s4164 and have been dealing with the same problem for a while. What I have figured out so far is that fnfx works only with APM not ACPI. Toshiba in the last couple of years has transitioned away from APM so the fnfx will only work with older non-phoenix based laptops. I have noticed though that since I have upgraded to Ubuntu gutsy there is more support for newer Toshiba laptops. about the only thing that I have found to do is to suck it up and remember to never buy Toshiba again until they offer better linux support.
