So. I pinned the working kernel version, updated everything, and like a moron also updated the Nvidia drivers from the graphics-drivers ppa, in readiness to try the upstream kernel version. Whoops. Now it no longer logged in at all, freezing in the same place it used to freeze when sleeping, just after ‘Started Manage, Install and Generate Color Profiles.’
So I removed the ppa, purged the Nvidia drivers, and then tried to get nouveau working... and now it all works, on all kernel versions. Which means trying the upstream version won’t tell us anything. I checked with lshw -c video and my 3D card is ‘display UNCLAIMED’ which makes sense. I actually have to use this machine, so I am not going to try anything else for the rest of the weekend, but I will try and get the NVidia drivers back to the state they were in initially.
