Found the root cause: the JaCoCo plugin in my builds needed updating to a more recent version. If anyone lights upon this problem; OpenJDK 8u181-b13-1ubuntu0.18.04.1 and newer break older JaCoCo releases. The newer versions of this tool do work with these and newer JDK releases up to and including 11.
