I have activated "bionic-proposed", updated my system and performed a
test. Unfortunately, the problem is still there.

It showed itself slightly differently (this time - but the appearance
has varied in the past as well): instead of an irregular black and white
patterned background, I got my configured background screen with a black
bar at the left side. But the essential symptoms remained the same:
mouse pointer does follow mouse movement but no reaction to the
keyboard; start program windows not shown on the screen; top bar not
shown; "ubuntu-dock" not shown.

The problem behaviour still seems non-deterministic: if I wait long
enough before I login (sufficiently long that I no longer hear disk
activity), then the login succeeds. If I try to login immediately, there
is a good chance that the login fails with the above symptoms.
