as this bug doesn't seem to be attracting too much attention i'll close
it. i've worked around the bug (just FYI) by simply changing sources.lst
and then in konsole "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-ugprade"
and well lots of patience thereafter. on all other computers i've seen
upgrading to gutsy (without gnupg) i have never encountered this error.
