Thank you for your help with this! I just now followed your suggestion. After installing linux-backports- modules and rebooting, the problem persists: still no sound at all within the 2.6.22-14 kernel.
Oh well ... (sigh) ... It turns out that linux-backports-modules-2.6.22-14-generic are currently installed (and they were installed before the linux-backports- modules package was installed). Should I uninstall them? The same is true for linux-backports-modules-generic.
