I did a test with: - ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, all updates installed, kernel 4.15.0.33 -> the screen still flickers ... meanwhile I use a 'work around': ubuntu 14.04.05 LTS, kernel 3.13.0-157 -> the screen is o.k. (NO flickering) BUT: that is not a real solution ...
