It appears that the error message Failed to construct test pipeline for 'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat'
(when testing the sound capture in GNOME/Ubuntu) is bogus. I managed to get sound working (playback and recording) and I still get the above gstreamer error.
