The quirk is more nuanced than I reported above. This reports groups correctly:
1. GUI login 2. Switch to TTY, login 3. "groups" 4. Switch to GUI 5. Launch Terminal 6. "groups" This only reports the username: 1. GUI Login 2. Launch Terminal 3. "groups" 4. Switch to TTY, login 5.
