G'aft Reinhard, Thank you for the follow-up re this bug. Sorry for the lack of information, I used apport to send off the bug info before I manually opened a bug ticket on launchpad - so it may be in the wild :)
I checked on the virgin Ubuntu 18.04 system and "ffmpeg" package is not installed, but libavcodec.57.107.100 dated 9Apr2018 is installed. I just added the lib's dbg symbols (from Unbuntu package site) prior to running "transcode" than segfault than apport-collect bug#. I did not install the full ffmpeg dbg symbols.
