I have a PPC g3 ibook 800 which I know is not officially supported, but it uses the ATI 7500 mobility radeon and completely Free drivers (ati don't do ppc ones anyway). I experience this issue too.
I have disabled AIGLX, RenderAccel, Composite and a host of other ATI specific settings and none of them seem to help.
