Did a clean install of ubuntu 7.10 on the same machine, but still the same problem.
Looking into /var/log/messages I found it populated with hundreds of errors like the following one, all of them only differing in the sector number mentioned at the end of each error: Nov 1 21:03:27 timetunnel kernel: [16904.112000] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE,SUGGEST_OK Nov 1 21:03:27 timetunnel kernel: [16904.112000] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Data Protect [current] Nov 1 21:03:27 timetunnel kernel: [16904.112000] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Add.
