Public bug reported:

I have plain Ubuntu 18.04 installation. When I press Alt-F2 in Gnome and
type xmag, xmag square appears on the screen, but it doesn't react to
moving mouse or pressing mouse keys. Also it's impossible to get rid of
it other than by opening terminal and typing 'pkill xmag'.

When xmag is started from the gnome-terminal, it works properly: square
follows the mouse and left click opens dialog with enlarged region of
the screen.
