If a significant portion of it needs to be rewritten anyway, maybe it could be worth considering porting it to another language entirely. I agree that Python would be an excellent candidate. It would make development much easier and as you said, take care of the many papercuts that Thunar does indeed currently have. Plus, Thunar needs to be ported to GTK3 eventually anyway.
