The patch from Harald Judt in comment 30 of this thread resolves all my problems with thunar. There was an earlier patch from him (Deactivate- SEND_MOVED-code-paths) which is no longer necessary when thunar is patched with Check-if-a-thunar-file-is-still-valid-before- reloading.patch from comment 30.
