Same issue with (X)ubuntu 18.04 with lightdm and nvidia-driver-390 and also nvidia-driver-340. Following setup (notebook):
$ lspci | egrep 'VGA|3D' 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 640M LE] (rev a1) After driver installation and reboot only blinking cursor no login, can't even switch to console with [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [F*].
