@Ken Wright, Yes, you mentioned it and it is why I suggested to add the extra rules... but I may be wrong as I'm no udev expert :'( Have you checked in your user settings if your account has "Use scanners" checked under "User privileges"? If not, maybe you'd have to give it a try to see if it solves the problem.
