I see the same problem on Gutsy with gmplayer when using xv or gl as output device. With x11 as output device the problem goes away (or when xserver-xgl is deactivated). Using just mplayer from the command line doesn't have this problem, regardless of output device. I have a Nvidia 7600GS with the proprietary driver. Bug #108973 seems to be a duplicate of this bug.
