I am experiencing the same problem. X will crash randomly and i will be back at the gdm login screen. Sometimes this will not happen for days at a time, sometimes it happens while im away from the machine, and sometimes it will happen so rapidly that i will bomb back to gdm 3 or 4 times in 10 minutes. At times X will crash and throw me back to gdm while attempting to log back in from a crash, before i can even interact with my desktop. My gdm log is the same as the one posted above. There seem to be many bugs posted descibing similar errors but attributing them to specific apps, but i just reinstalled fresh gutsy and i see no change in the problem over when i was using accelerated nvidia, gnash, and compiz. The only seemingly related item is that firefox crashes a lot with the error message "core dumped" -- it even crashed on the live cd.
