I do not believe this problem is caused by compiz. I experienced random lockups both with compiz enabled and disabled. I have an nVidia graphics card and use the restricted drivers. No specific action causes the freeze - it's happened while I was in the middle of typing, while the computer was left idle (I originally thought that was the problem), while no programs at all were running, etc. This occurred in Gnome, using Gutsy. I have not tried any other window managers.
