This happens for me after an upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy. The nm- applet process dies and the network icon disappears from the tray. If I restart nm-applet it appears in the correct state (ie. wired, connected, with an VPNC connection). After a restart I get the number of nm-applet process that have been started during the session.
