No problem at all about being a Linux newbie. We all start somewhere ;) Can you try triggering the hang, and then hitting CTRL-ALT-F1. That should give you a text-based login screen (if that doesn't work, try CTRL-ALT-F2. If that doesn't work, then I'll talk you through sending me the saved logs...)
See if you can run the commands there. You'll need to write them down, and then type them back in.
