Public bug reported: Binary package hint: restricted-manager
This is fairly long description, and unfortunately the actually bug occurred last Saturday (though I didn't realize it) so have to recall the circumstances from memory. Last Saturday I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy. It when along fine. On reboot everything seemed to be working, when I logged in for the first time the Restricted Driver Manger popped up and informed me (IIRC) that the driver for my nVidia was ready to use. What I specifically remember was that the restricted driver manager showed the nvidia driver, showed it was enabled, and status was "in use". No required action was indicated. So I tried out Compiz for a bit to see what had changed and then dropped back to Metacity (which I prefer). On the following Friday, I wanted to test out Compiz again, and when I enabled the it, all my Windows failed to have borders. I had seen this behavior in Feisty, it was related to bug #73544. The missing 'Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"' was the cause. This was missing from my xorg.conf again, but I did not manually re-add it this time. In feisty I do not recall if I manually added it or used the restricted driver manager to add it. So the next day, I unchecked the "NVIDIA" accelerated graphics driver" let it uninstall and then rechecked it without a reboot (I cannot allow my computer to reboot without the proprietary nvidia driver because the opensource nv driver just corrupts the display for me; see bug #29975). During it's reinstalled I noticed it was installing nvidia-glx-new, instead of nvidia-glx. The restricted driver manager now shows "NVIDIA" accelerated graphics driver (latest cards)". My xorg.conf now has 'Option "AddARGBVisuals" "True" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"' In it. I'm not sure where the missing lines from my xorg.conf when between feisty and gutsy, but that may be a different bug. For this bug I'm claiming that if there was a more appropriate driver for my nvidia card, the Restricted Driver Manager should have informed me in some way. Set status in the manager to "new driver available" or perhaps show the other driver on a different line but unchecked. ** Affects: restricted-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Restricted Manager did not inform me of a different nVidia driver on upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157743 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
