I get the same problem on a fairly fresh 17.10 desktop installation on a Lenovo P51 laptop. Whenever I install a new kernel, the dkms installation calls plymouth --ping which hangs forever. It seems killing plymouth in these cases will progress the build, but it has to be done multiple times per dkms run.
