The change as to show hidden files or not affects the Gnome open dialog.
Changing this in any application that uses the Gnome open dialog affects
all other Gnome applications. For example show hidden files in gedit
will cause the hidden files to show up in OpenOffice and vice versa. It
is not a bug of OpenOffice as far as I can tell. The manner in which the
document you quoted to enable/disable showing hidden files in OpenOffice
is the same thing you would need to do to change it in gedit as well.
