I can reproduce this bug with version 2.12.0-0ubuntu5 of Evolution (that came with Gutsy). I am also running on a 64bit platform.
As soon as I click the "Reply" button the person gets added into my Contacts list. The plugin is enabled but by default the check box under preferences is unchecked but yet the plug-in still works. Technically if the box in the preferences is unchecked it should disable that functionality without having to disable the plug-in completely. I've also tried toggling it on and off and even restarting Evolution.
