it has turned out that the problem persists even with the older versions
of linux-firmware (1.157.11 and 1.157.10) - i tried with them today

what i did was:

sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.157.11_all.deb
sudo reboot

and nothing changed
then:

sudo apt-get remove linux-firmware
sudo apt-get install linux-generic linux-image-generic linux-generic-hwe-16.04
linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.157.11_all.deb
sudo reboot

and the problem persisted
then:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-generic linux-image-generic
linux-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04
sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-generic linux-image-generic linux-generic-hwe-16.04
linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-firmware
sudo reboot

and there was no change again

same with 1.157.10

probably the problem comes from another package, but i remember very
well how there had been sound in the old games and in all browsers
before those september updates, and the sound menu bar volume control
slider worked

what else could it be?!
