I'll check out the gutsy-proposed libraries to see if it gets any better. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be the window manager's job to keep track of where to put windows at the end of an close/open cycle. The question must be _how_ the windows communicate where they want to be when they reopen. This question might not have been investigated to closely, since there's been few people who would replace metacity as the default window manager before.
One reason this would be the window manager's job is that they treat "workspaces" differently (they were "virtual desktops" before compiz). In other words: how to communicate a window's position/size/state state should be communicated in a standard way between apps and window managers. I'm curious who's job it would be if it isn't the window manager's?
