It looks like the postinst couldn't obtain the FQDN:
Setting up msmtp (1.6.3-1build1) ...
hostname: Name or service not known
dpkg: error processing package msmtp (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
And that caused a fatal (-e) error:
db_get msmtp/auto_from

db_get msmtp/maildomain
hostname=`hostname --fqdn`
