Uh oh, bad news: I booted the LiveCD again and checked that access was fast, then booted the installed Gutsy to get fdisk info for reinstalling. And...the network is totally fine. Which would be great, except I don't know what changed. So: slow network? Boot the LiveCD, then reboot. Maybe it'll work. If not, try again.
