Well it seems to me that the main issue of contention here is the detected settings being incorrect for given hardware. I am wondering how usplash defines things like vertical and horizontal refresh rates and if they are modifiable. Perhaps something along the lines of X's modelines?
I'm kinda of stabbing in the dark here but it seems that some people have gotten it working at certain resolutions but it doesn't work at others that it seemingly should for their hardware. IE more than few have gotten this working at 800x600 yet I doubt that the 1024x768 that it was originally configured to run at was beyond the bounds of their displays capabilities.
