On Gutsy w/ stock fglrx 8.37 and xserver-xgl (running compiz-fusion) I can confirm that if I run the visualization in fullscreen it eventually crashes Rhythmbox, however, it does not crash X for me.
Effectively it maximized the visualization with a white-screen on that side of my cube (and instantly stopped playing my music).
